Australian Dance Awards Principal Sponsor Harlequin Floors with winner Bangarra Dance Theatre for Outstanding Performance by a Company 2017 and Blakdance
In a successful and emotional awards ceremony, Bangarra Dance Theatre won, for the
second year running, the award for Outstanding Performance by a Company.
Presented by Mark Rasmussen of Harlequin Floors, Merindah Donnelly and Carla
McGrath of Blakdance the award was accepted on behalf of Bangarra Dance
Theatre’s Daniel Riley.

Noel Tovey, the first Indigenous ballet dancer in Australia, was inducted into the Hall of
Fame with a touching speech from Robina Beard OAM. Noel graciously accepted the
honour with a very emotional recount of how he became a dancer and how his
first ballet teacher suggested he clean the studios in return for lessons as
Noel was not able to afford these at the time.

Entertainment throughout the night was a fantastic variety ranging from Djirri Djirri Dance
Group, The Australian Ballet, Raw and Rugged Dance Crews to Lehenda Ukrainian
Dance Company and Murmuration to name a few. Benjamin Hancock performed and
co-hosted with Yana Alana entertaining the audience throughout the evening. 

Other winners from the night included Catapault Dance for Outstanding Achievement in Youth
Dance and Great Sport for Outstanding Achievement in Community Dance.

The award for Services to Dance Education went to Kim Walker, Outstanding Achievement in
Dance Film was awarded to the Samaya Wives. Outstanding Achievement in
Commercial Dance, Musicals or Physical Theatre went to Jack Chambers. Services
to Dance award went to costume designer Jennifer Irwin with the Outstanding
Achievement in Independent Dance awarded to Liesel Zink.

Benjamin Hancock was awarded Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer with Most
Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer going to Ako Kondo.   

Mark Rasmussen gave a passionate speech at the opening ceremony and also presented Bangarra with their Outstanding Performance by a Company award. Mark commented on the evenings events "Harlequin Floors is proud to support the Australian Dance Awards. It is such a celebration of the amazing quality and depth of dance in Australia".
